The Sun Is A Pollution-Free Source of Energy

Posted by admin | Basic Concepts | Saturday 31 October 2009 5:54 pm

SunWith issues such as global warming, depletion of ozone layer and increase in the content of carbon prominent in today’s scenario, our major concern is reducing the level of pollution in the atmosphere. Thus various steps are being taken in order to replace the old methods of generating electricity which causes pollution with alternatives which causes less pollution. In previous times the sun’s energy was only used for biological processes. All existence on the earth depends on solar energy. Green plants make food by means of photosynthesis. Light is essential from in this process to take place.

This radiance usually comes from sun. Animal get their food from plants or by eating other animals that feed on plants. Plants and animals also need some heat to stay alive. Thus sun’s application area was limited to a small range of biological purposes and domestic application such as drying clothes etc. Now the use of solar energy has spread to a wider range, the major application area is generation of electricity.

The sun is a large sphere of very hot gases, the heat being generated by various kinds of fusion reactions. The heat from the sun is harnessed by the solar power system, which converts it into electricity and supplies it for use. Solar power system comprise of huge panel of solar cell also known as photovoltaic (PV) cell. These photovoltaic cells are made up of semiconductor material such as silicon. The PV cell panel is fitted at the roof tops of the building at certain angles and facing south. Also there are tracking mounts that tract the location of the sun and adjust to it accordingly. This technology is majorly used in elaborate solar system.

The sunlight falling on the panel causes the electrons in the semiconductor material to loosen from the atom a. These electrons then flow into the external circuit and form the electric current. The solar power generated is directly proportional to the number of solar panels installed i.e. more solar panel would generate more electricity.

Solar energy provides economical and practical solution to the environment related problem. PV cells helps to generate power that causes less or no pollution by reducing the emission of the harmful gasses such as carbon dioxide (CO2) that were evident in the traditional methods. Since sun is free and available most days, this method is cost efficient too as it includes just the installation cost and very low maintenance. A bright and a sunny day would always produce more electricity however electricity would also be generated on a cloudy day but the amount produced will be comparatively low.

Choices of Mailbox

Posted by admin | Basic Concepts | Friday 30 October 2009 9:58 pm

In the United States, most houses have a mailbox. Some houses have their mailboxes in their own yard while some other only put mailboxes on one side of the street. Every house owner is responsible for providing his/her own mailbox so that he/she can receive his/her mailbox posts. When choosing your mailbox, there are many choices available to you.

First thing you will need to know is if your mailbox will be fixed to your house or if it will be placed by the curb. After you know if you need a house mailbox or a curb mailbox you can begin shopping for the kind you need. You can choose how big or little of a mailbox you want or need. If you need a house mailbox you will need a flat and somewhat small mailbox. You probably don’t want a huge bulky box on the front of your house. You also have a choice in what color you would like your mailbox to be. Some people choose to have their residential mailboxes the same color as their house, or at least compliment the color of their house, while to others it doesn’t make any difference. Another option you have when purchasing a mailbox is what it is made out of. You can buy plastic mailboxes or metal whitehall mailboxes. No matter what your choice is, you need to make sure that you place your address plaques and your mailbox in the correct location so that the mail carrier can find it and deliver your mail to you.

Why You Should Consider Having A Rain Barrel

Posted by admin | Basic Concepts | Friday 21 August 2009 6:58 pm

Installing a rain barrel is a smart thing a home owner can do in order to prevent droughts, especially for home owners live in places hard hit such as California (in the dry summer seasons) where the possibility of water limitations and higher cost for usage could be a reality. Besides preventing droughts, storing rainwater in rain water barrels can really lower your water bills. Rain harvesting is certainly not a new idea. People have collected rainwater and used it to water gardens and irrigate crops almost since the beginning of time.

If you decide to purchase a rain barrel, you need to keep in mind that the rain barrel you choose needs to be child safe and mosquito proof. Many of today’s rain barrels for sale are fully screened with a lid that you can fasten securely for child safety, to keep debris out of the water, and prevent swarms of mosquitoes from breeding. In order to prevent algae, a rain barrel should be made of a dark material that does not allow the penetration of sunlight. Also make sure that the material is non-toxic. Don’t forget that water that has been collected in rain barrels is not meant for consumption by humans or animals. However, your landscaping, gardens and houseplants will thrive when you use this natural, untreated water to care for them.
